Wispr Flow
4.0

AI voice dictation that works in every app

Superwhisper
4.2

AI dictation with a one-time lifetime license, not just a subscription

ToolsGavel verdict

Superwhisper wins on the things you can measure: a lower monthly price, a lifetime license that pays for itself in under three years, a free tier with no word cap on local dictation, an offline mode and a written no-training promise. Wispr Flow wins on the team side, with a clearer self-serve ladder up to SSO and HIPAA, and on a free tier that starts from a simple weekly allowance instead of a setup session. Pick Superwhisper if you work on a Mac, care where your voice goes or want to own the app. Pick Wispr Flow if you want the least configuration, or you are rolling dictation out to a team that needs admin controls.

Which one should you pick?

Choose Wispr Flow if…

  • You want to install it and dictate within minutes, with no model to pick and no modes to configure.
  • You are buying for a team and need SAML SSO or a signed HIPAA BAA at a published self-serve price.
  • You do not mind a cloud service, since you are always online anyway and your employer's policy allows it.

Choose Superwhisper if…

  • Your dictation must stay on the device, or you work somewhere without reliable internet.
  • You expect to dictate for three or more years and would rather pay $249.99 once than $144 every year.
  • You live in Cursor, Claude Code or another coding agent and want to answer it by voice.

What each one really costs

Audited pricing Wispr Flow Superwhisper
Advertised price $15/user/mo (Pro, billed monthly), $12/user/mo billed annually $7.08/mo billed annually, or $249.99 once for a lifetime license
Real monthly cost, billed annually $12/mo $7.08/mo
Real monthly cost, month-to-month $15/mo $8.49/mo
Month-to-month premium +25% +20%
The billing catch Trustpilot removed Wispr Flow's profile in September 2026 for a guidelines breach; before that it read 2.7/5, citing accuracy that drops once the free trial ends. A one-time $249.99 lifetime license beats the subscription after about two to three years, but setup is commonly compared to configuring a server rather than installing an app.

Which is better, Wispr Flow or Superwhisper?

For most individual users, Superwhisper. It is cheaper at every billing cycle, it sells a lifetime license, and it can run entirely on your machine. Wispr Flow is the pick when you are buying for a team, or when you want dictation to work the minute you install it without choosing models or modes.

Both apps do the same basic job. You press a hotkey, talk, and cleaned-up text lands wherever your cursor sits. Both cover Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and both claim 100+ languages. The split is in how the work gets done: Wispr Flow sends your audio to its servers every time, while Superwhisper lets you choose between local models and cloud models. That one choice drives most of the differences in price, privacy and offline use below.

What do Wispr Flow and Superwhisper cost?

Superwhisper is cheaper on every plan, and it is the only one of the two with a one-time option.

Wispr Flow ProSuperwhisper Pro
Billed monthly$15/mo$8.49/mo
Billed annually$144/yr ($12/mo)$84.99/yr ($7.08/mo)
LifetimeNot offered$249.99 once
Three-year total (cheapest option)$432$249.99

The lifetime math is simple. $249.99 undercuts Wispr Flow’s annual plan after about 21 months, and Superwhisper’s own annual plan after about three years. If you will still be dictating in 2029, the lifetime license is the cheapest way to own either product. If you are not sure, the monthly plan costs $8.49 and you can leave.

Wispr Flow’s higher tiers are Growth at $23 per user per month ($18 billed annually) for SSO and HIPAA, and a Growth tier with Notetaker at $33 per user per month. Its pricing page lists the Growth prices next to struck-through higher numbers, and it does not say which is current, so confirm at checkout. Superwhisper’s Enterprise tier is quote-only. For a five-person team on self-serve plans, the arithmetic is $720 a year for Wispr Flow Pro billed annually against about $425 for five Superwhisper Pro annual licenses. Plug your own seat count into our true cost calculator before you decide.

Which free tier is more generous?

Superwhisper’s free tier is larger, though Wispr Flow’s is simpler to understand.

Wispr Flow’s Free plan gives you a 2,000-word weekly allowance on Mac and Windows, with a 5,000-word maximum. It slows down as you approach the allowance and blocks new dictations at the maximum until the reset on Sunday at 12 a.m. Pacific. Its help center does not publish a number for iPhone and Android, and says allowances can differ by account and change without an app update. You also get a 14-day trial of paid features by default.

Superwhisper’s Free plan includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to two modes without AI processing, custom vocabulary and text replacements. New users also get 3,000 words of Pro, including cloud models and Meetings, after which the app falls back to Free and nothing is deleted. The catch is quality: the free local Whisper model does not include the AI cleanup and context awareness that Pro does.

If you dictate a few hundred words a day, the Wispr Flow allowance will run out midweek. Superwhisper’s local dictation will not.

Is Wispr Flow or Superwhisper more private?

Superwhisper, as long as you use local models. Wispr Flow is cloud-only.

Wispr Flow’s FAQ says transcription always happens in the cloud. Audio is captured on your device, sent over TLS, and discarded once transcribed, unless you switch on dictation cloud storage so history syncs across devices. A setting called “Improve the model for everyone” controls whether your audio, transcripts and edits train its models; with it off, the policy says nothing you say is used for training. On Growth and Enterprise plans training is off by default and locked, and admins can enforce that across the organization. Wispr’s privacy page does not mention a zero-data-retention mode.

Superwhisper’s privacy policy splits it by model type. With local models, your audio and transcripts never leave the device. Its own cloud models process in memory and do not store the request after it completes. Choose a third-party model through Superwhisper and the request goes to that provider under its terms; bring your own API key and the request goes straight from the app to the provider. The policy also carries a written no-training guarantee, with a promise of notice before the default changes. Server logs are kept for 30 days.

Neither vendor’s claims have been audited by us. They come from the policies as published on November 8, 2026.

Can you use Wispr Flow or Superwhisper offline?

Only Superwhisper. Local voice models transcribe without internet, and the docs say “Superwhisper works offline.” The limit is formatting: offline AI cleanup needs the local S1-mini model in Message or Mail mode, and any other AI processing needs a connection. Hardware matters too. Superwhisper says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models, so offline dictation is really an Apple Silicon feature.

Wispr Flow has no offline mode. If your plane, train or client site has no signal, it does not dictate.

Which has better accuracy and speed?

Nobody has published a result worth quoting, and we did not run our own test. Wispr Flow’s site makes a speed claim (45 words per minute typing against 220 spoken) and says accuracy improves with use, but gives no accuracy figure. Superwhisper publishes neither. The rival-app blogs that rank for this search make confident accuracy claims with no method behind them, so we have left them out.

What is knowable is the architecture. A cloud app must upload audio and wait for text, so it depends on your connection. A local model depends on your chip. On a recent Apple Silicon Mac the local route is fast; on an Intel Mac, Superwhisper itself recommends cloud models. For a sentence or a paragraph either app is quick enough that the difference will not decide anything. Wispr Flow’s help center states a single desktop dictation can run up to 20 minutes on both Free and Pro.

Both claim 100+ languages. Wispr Flow’s site advises picking a specific language over auto-detect for best accuracy. Superwhisper adds translation to English on Pro.

Which works better in apps, code editors and meetings?

Both type into whatever has focus, so neither needs a per-app plugin. Wispr Flow’s homepage lists ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, terminals and code editors. Superwhisper’s docs go further on the developer side: Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and several other coding agents are listed, and it pops up when an agent needs input so you can answer by voice. It also has modes you can write yourself, and a context-awareness setting that uses selected text and clipboard content.

For meetings, Wispr Flow’s Notetaker runs on Mac and Windows. Superwhisper’s Meetings feature records Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or Slack calls without a bot, on macOS only. If you want call notes on Windows, that is a point for Wispr Flow.

Our Wispr Flow review and Superwhisper review go deeper on each, and the best AI dictation apps guide lines up the wider field.

Which local model should you use in Superwhisper?

Superwhisper’s voice-model page lists Cohere Transcribe, Parakeet and the Whisper family, and recommends Cohere Transcribe or Parakeet Multilanguage. Cohere Transcribe is the most accurate of the local options (Superwhisper reports an 8.4% word error rate on an Apple M4, a vendor figure we did not test). It does not do realtime transcription and is missing on Windows ARM. Parakeet is the fastest at 476 MB for English, or 494 MB for 24 languages. Both need Pro. On the free tier, Whisper Large v3 Turbo is the practical pick: it is rated 8 for speed and 8 for accuracy and weighs 1.6 GB.

You can also bring your own API keys for other providers’ models, but only on Pro.

Can you use Superwhisper on Windows, Android or Linux?

Yes to all three. Superwhisper has a Windows desktop app, an Android app on Google Play and a Linux app, announced on superwhisper.com/linux as “Introducing Superwhisper for Linux.” The Linux app needs Wayland (Hyprland, KDE Plasma or GNOME) and systemd, so X11-only setups are out. Its page lists Omarchy, Arch, CachyOS, Ubuntu 24.04+, Linux Mint 22+, Debian 13+, Fedora 40+ and openSUSE Tumbleweed, on x86-64 and ARM. If your setup does not fit, look at Spokenly or the open-source tools below. Wispr Flow covers Windows and Android and has no Linux app.

How do Wispr Flow and Superwhisper compare with Spokenly, MacWhisper and Willow?

Facts below come from each vendor’s own page, checked on November 8, 2026.

  • Spokenly runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and iPhone. Local dictation with free Whisper and Parakeet models is unlimited and costs $0 with no account. Bring your own API keys and Spokenly charges nothing; your provider bills you. Local+ is a $29 one-time purchase, and Pro with managed cloud models is $12 a month billed yearly or $15 month to month. That is the same Pro price as Wispr Flow.
  • MacWhisper is a Mac app built around transcribing files with local models, so audio stays on your machine. The tier is free forever, and Pro is a one-time 64 euros with lifetime updates. Optional cloud AI works with your own OpenAI or Anthropic keys. It is a transcription tool first, so check that it types into other apps the way you need before you pay.
  • Willow Voice is the closest rival to Wispr Flow. Its Basic plan is free with unlimited use of a lighter speech model and 20 Scribe uses a week. Pro shows $15 and $12 with a “Save 20%” annual option, matching Wispr Flow’s Pro. Its page lists Mac, Windows and iPhone, and does not say whether it works offline. Our Willow Voice review has more.

Pick Spokenly if you want Superwhisper’s local-first approach with a free local tier and a $29 one-time upgrade. Pick MacWhisper for recorded files. Pick Willow if you want Wispr Flow’s price with a looser free tier.

Is there a free or open-source alternative to Superwhisper?

Yes, two worth knowing. Handy is MIT-licensed, free and works fully offline on Windows, macOS and Linux, though Linux on Wayland needs extra text-input tools. VoiceInk is GPL-3.0 licensed, macOS only (macOS 15 or later) and processes audio offline. You can build it from source; the compiled version is sold with updates and priority support, and has a free trial. Superwhisper’s docs state no open-source license.

Which is better for teams?

Wispr Flow, because it publishes a self-serve path. Pro adds a shared team workspace, centralized billing and teammate invitations. Growth adds SAML SSO, multiple email domains, individual usage reporting and organization-wide HIPAA controls with a signed BAA. Enterprise adds SCIM and managed deployment.

Superwhisper’s team story is quote-only. Enterprise lists SOC 2 Type II certification, centralized billing, model access control and volume discounts, and the ability to host models. That is a strong offer for a security team and a poor one for a five-person startup that wants to click “buy.”

How do you cancel, get a refund or find a discount?

Superwhisper is clearer on all three. To cancel, sign in at superwhisper.com/billing and choose Cancel subscription. Pro features stay active until the period ends, then the account drops to Free, and your modes, vocabulary and history stay on your device. Its docs give individual plans (Monthly, Annual and Lifetime) a 30-day refund window from the first purchase, requested through a form on its site. Renewal charges are not refundable on their own, so cancel before the renewal date, and Enterprise has no self-serve refunds. App Store and Google Play purchases go through Apple or Google instead.

On discounts, Superwhisper gives students, educators, academic institutions and non-profits 40% off after verification. You email [email protected] from an academic or organization address before buying. It works only on superwhisper.com purchases. The annual plan saves about 17% over monthly. The free 3,000 words of Pro let you test before you spend.

Wispr Flow’s default trial is 14 days. Refunds are handled case by case through support: the help center describes full, prorated or no refund, while the terms of service say refunds are issued only if required by law. Upgrades take effect immediately with prorated billing. Deleting your account cancels a subscription with no refund, so ask support first.

So which should you pick?

If dictation privacy, offline use or long-term cost is your priority, pick Superwhisper and start on the free tier. If you are rolling this out to a team, or you want the simplest setup, pick Wispr Flow and use its free allowance for a week first. Both let you try before paying, so the cheapest move is to run each for a few days on your real work.

If neither fits, the best AI dictation apps guide covers VoiceOS and Willow Voice too.

Not sold on either?

VoiceOS
3.7

Worth a look if you want voice-triggered actions across apps, not only dictation into a text field.

Willow Voice
3.8

The closest price match to Wispr Flow according to our review, with a less restrictive free tier.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Wispr Flow or Superwhisper?

Superwhisper is the better fit for most individual users on a Mac. It costs less ($8.49 a month against $15), sells a $249.99 lifetime license, and can run fully offline. Wispr Flow is the better fit for a team that needs SSO or HIPAA controls, or anyone who wants dictation working with no setup.

Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper pricing: which is cheaper?

Superwhisper, on every billing cycle. Monthly it is $8.49 against $15. Annually it is $84.99 against $144. Over three years, Wispr Flow Pro on annual billing costs $432 while Superwhisper's lifetime license is $249.99 once. Both have a free tier, so test before paying.

Is Superwhisper's lifetime license cheaper than Wispr Flow?

Yes, from year two. $249.99 is less than two years of Wispr Flow Pro billed annually ($288). Against Superwhisper's own annual plan the break-even is about three years. Wispr Flow has no lifetime option.

Does Wispr Flow work offline? Does Superwhisper?

Wispr Flow does not. Its FAQ says transcription always happens in the cloud. Superwhisper works offline with its local voice models. Its docs add that AI formatting offline needs the local S1-mini model in Message or Mail mode, and other AI processing needs internet.

Is Wispr Flow or Superwhisper more private?

Superwhisper, if you use local models: its privacy policy says audio and transcripts never leave your device. Wispr Flow sends audio to its servers, discards it after transcription unless you enable cloud storage, and lets you turn off training. On Growth and Enterprise plans training is off by default and locked.

What is the best alternative to Wispr Flow?

Superwhisper if you want offline processing or a one-time price. Willow Voice if you want a close price match, and VoiceOS if you want voice-triggered actions. See our best AI dictation apps guide for all of them side by side.

Is there a good free dictation option on Mac besides these two?

macOS has built-in Dictation, which is free and our review of Wispr Flow notes processes speech on-device, but its formatting and app awareness are weaker. Superwhisper's free tier and Wispr Flow's free tier are both stronger starting points for most people.

How do I cancel Superwhisper?

Sign in at superwhisper.com/billing and choose Cancel subscription. Pro features stay active until the end of the billing period, then the account moves to Free, and your modes, vocabulary and history stay on your device. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your Apple or Google account instead.

Is there a Superwhisper discount?

Yes, for some buyers. Students, educators, academic institutions and non-profits get 40% off list price after verification: email [email protected] from your academic or organization address, with proof, before you buy. It applies only to purchases on superwhisper.com and cannot be combined with other discounts. Everyone else can save about 17% by choosing the annual plan over monthly.

What is the best local model in Superwhisper?

Superwhisper's docs recommend Cohere Transcribe or Parakeet Multilanguage, both Pro models. Cohere Transcribe is rated most accurate (an 8.4% word error rate on an Apple M4, by Superwhisper's own figure) but has no realtime transcription. Parakeet is the fastest. On the free tier the pick is Whisper Large v3 Turbo.

Can I use my own API key in Superwhisper?

Yes, on Pro. The feature table lists bring-your-own API keys for Pro and not for Free. With your own key, requests go from the app to the provider you choose.

Does Superwhisper work with Claude Code?

Yes. Its docs list Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and other coding agents, and say Superwhisper pops up when the agent needs input so you can answer by voice.

Is there a Superwhisper alternative for Windows, Android or Linux?

Superwhisper itself has a Windows app, an Android app on Google Play and, as of its Linux launch page, a Linux app. Linux needs Wayland (Hyprland, KDE Plasma or GNOME) and systemd. Spokenly also lists a Linux app, and the free open-source Handy runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Wispr Flow covers Windows and Android but not Linux.

Is there an open-source alternative to Superwhisper?

Yes. Handy is MIT-licensed, free and works fully offline on Windows, macOS and Linux. VoiceInk is GPL-3.0, macOS only (macOS 15 or later), processes audio offline, and sells a licensed build with updates and support. Superwhisper's own docs state no open-source license.

How do Spokenly and MacWhisper compare with Wispr Flow and Superwhisper?

Spokenly offers unlimited free on-device dictation and a $29 one-time Local+ license. MacWhisper is a Mac app with a free tier and a one-time Pro license of 64 euros, aimed at transcribing files locally. The neighbor-tools section on this page has the details.

How we compared

We compared both products using each vendor's own pages and documentation: the Wispr Flow pricing page, privacy policy and help center, and the Superwhisper homepage, billing docs, privacy policy and product docs. Prices checked on wisprflow.ai/pricing and superwhisper.com on November 8, 2026. We also researched what people search for around this pair (Google Autocomplete, related searches and Keyword Planner) and checked the extra answers on the same day: Superwhisper's plans, voice-model, subscription and coding-agent docs, plus the Spokenly, MacWhisper, Willow Voice, Handy and VoiceInk pages for the neighbor-tool section. We could not reach Reddit threads from our tools, so this page has no section on Reddit opinion. We did not run a head-to-head accuracy or latency test, and neither vendor publishes one, so we make no accuracy claims beyond what they state. Third-party review sites were used only for context, and none of their numbers appear in the table.
